The aim of this study is to implement geoprocessing in a SaaS WebGIS mapping application with the use of a desktop GIS plug-in. Online mapping platforms enable citizens to generate geographic content that can be geoprocessed and displayed in real time as scientific data. Key Words: Web Based GIS, ArcGIS Online, Secondary School, Geography Education WebGIS has an important potential for geography education, although it still has some disadvantages compared to desktop GIS. The study also revealed a positive attitude of the both groups towards the two different platforms. The scores of the students in the pre- and post-tests increased by 31.91% from 25.44% to 57.35% with the control group (ArcGIS Desktop) while the same increase was 25.29% from 22.50% to 47.76% with the experimental group (ArcGIS Online). As the study revealed, both educational settings ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online affected the students’ success positively in the exercises with a slightly more improvement with ArcGIS Desktop. Also, teachers who attended the application had survey related to application. Pro-and-post tests were administered before and after the lesson to find out how the GIS platform effected the students’ success in the lesson and a survey was also applied at the end of the lesson to receive students' perceptions about the GIS platform and the exercises. The lesson lasted four hours during which students were first introduced to basic GIS functionalities and then implemented two different exercises on earthquakes concerning the world and Turkey. The same lesson was implemented by two groups of students from each school one group with ArcGIS 10.1 and the other with ArcGIS Online in a computer laboratory. In the study, a GIS based lesson was developed according to the 9th grade geography lesson with the topics on earthquakes in the world and Turkey, and this lesson was implemented together with 172 students from five different schools in Istanbul. The aim of this study is to compare the use of web-based and desktop GIS in order to find out the potential of the use of Web-based GIS in secondary school geography lessons. Due to advancements in information technologies in the early 2000s started transferring desktop GIS to Internet platform and finally made Web based GIS (WebGIS) available to be used as a teaching tool in secondary education.
